Birth Story

10:00 AM

My husband and I arrived at our OB office for my 40 week appointment. I was 40 weeks + 1 day. We were supposed to have the appointment later in the week but my Midwife wanted to check my BP and send me for blood work to make sure everything was good before attempting breech delivery.

When we got into our room the nurse took my BP and it was slightly elevated but not by much. She said she wanted me to go get blood and ursine tests done just to be sure but everything seemed good and she was going to send us on our way. My husband requested they ultrasound me to see if baby was still breech. Previously our midwife preformed an ultrasound on me and she was having a hard time interpreting what was what but could at least see baby was head up. So she grabbed the ultrasound equipment and said that the ultrasound tech was available so she should just grab her since she wasn’t very good at them. The tech determined baby was still drank breech but then she thought she couldn’t see much fluid left. She fortunately had an opening and gave me a quick scan and determined I had very little fluid left as well as my placenta was showing signs of aging. our doctor came in and took a look and determined with the lack of fluid and baby’s size ot Would not be a smooth delivery and there was potential risks of neurological damage from the cord becoming constricted. That was if we could deliver that same day. He said that we needed to have a c-section that afternoon. I was so heart broken. I had done everything to have this baby naturally and in the end there was nothing I could do. I had never heard of an aging placenta before but the lack of fluid was enough for me to be on board with getting the babe out while it was still healthy.

1:00 PM

We arrived at the hospital for pre-op and it was so strange knowing in a few hours I was going to be holding my baby. I felt content about how everything turned out because I know God does everything for a reason and I prayed about having peace with how things ended since c-section was first brought up at 36 weeks. My doula barely got to me in time before going into surgery since it was so last minute! But she stayed with my husband while they took me into the OR to prep. I don’t know why but it was really annoying that they wouldn’t let him be there for the epidural and other prep.

4:00 PM

We walked into the OR and everyone was busy prepping something. There was like 15 people in the room and no one even acknowledged me when I walked in. I was thinking of all the jokes I could say but I decided against any. My nurse sat me down on the table and the anesthesiologist came over to give me my spinal. My nurse was about 5’6 100 lbs and requested I lean over into her with all my weight as I sat on the table. I was weighing 220 with a baby in my belly at 5’10. I was like are you sure?! After my spinal was in the laid me down and my legs felt like they were miles behind the rest of my body. It was so strange. Next thing I know they are all prepped and ready for surgery.

My nurse starts walking out and says I am going to grab the husband. A few minutes later my doctor announces ”first incision 4:35”. My husband walks into the door shortly after. The door opens on my left so he literally sees the whole table, my face with the curtain in front of it and my stomach sliced open on the other side. He then comes to my side trying not to alarm me that I was sliced open already. Just as a warning c-sections sound very violent. It sounds like the stuck a vacuum in a pool filled with leaves if you can picture that. At the same time you can’t feel anything but your body is moving like sometime is tugging on your legs side to side to scorch you over. It is a little scary for your partner who can see what’s going on but we just kept talking to each other and it helped void out the noise. My doctors were very nice and did not talk much besides what was necessary.

4:35 PM

The doctors dropped the curtain because the baby was about to be born but I couldn’t see since I was laying on my back. But my husband could see and they let him announce the gender. They announced baby has arrived and held up the most beautiful baby boy! My husband thought I could see but I asked him what is it? And he looked at me so lovingly and said “it’s a boy, I can’t believe it!“ then he went back to admiring our son while he was getting suction and came back down to me and said “his balls are massive!” Haha! It was wonderful. My husband went over with the boy to the warming table where he cut the cord and they weighed and measured and fingerprinted him. He was 8lbs 15oz, 20.25 inches and had huge hands and a huge head. Then he came back to me for the rest of the operation and they wheeled us back to our pre op room.

We had to stay there for two hours to be monitored after surgery. I learned if I am ever in that situation again to request the monitors that they stick all over your check be put on my back or elsewhere. I tried doing the breast crawl after delivery and he did a great job but was struggling due to the wires everywhere on my chest. Baby was healthy, I was healthy and we were moved to our room shortly after!

For things going not according to our plan or wishes we had a good experience. Most of the staff was wonderful and we loved our doctor. I pray that next time things go more smoothly!
